Former Formula One World Champion and Indy 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve grabbed his first ever NASCAR Whelen Euro Series podium finish last Saturday at the Autodromo di Franciacorta in Italy.
After starting third in Saturday’s ELITE 1 Round 3 among 31 competitors, Villeneuve never surrendered his third spot in the 29-lap race. He was able to put pressure on Marc Goossens for second and showed an impressive pace. In the end, the Go Fas Racing driver crossed the finish line third behind Alon Day and Marc Goossens to grab his first ever top-3 in his young Euro NASCAR career.
“It was a physical race on that short track and it was fun,” said Villeneuve. “The fastest lap is important for the grid for the second race. Unfortunately we were faster in the end of the race when the tires weren’t fresh anymore. I was trying to get closer to Marc in case he made a mistake.”
The Montreal-native motorsports legend, who already boasts podium finishes in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series, is already looking forward to Euro NASCAR’s Rounds 5 and 6 at the famous Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Great Britain to go for his first NASCAR win.
Villeneuve said: “I’m excited to go there, I’ve never driven at Brands Hatch. I turned a few laps thee in a Williams a few years ago but that was just for filming. It looks fun and like a really busy race track. Also, there are tons of fans there, that’s crazy and amazing. The British fans are just amazing. I remember when we were at Silverstone, they were there in shorts even if it was raining. It was just tons of them and that’s really important.”
Villeneuve will be back in action at the famous American Speedfest VII at Brands Hatch on June 1-2. All races will be streamed live on Fanschoice.tv, the Euro NASCAR Facebook page and YouTube channel, Motorsport.tv and a vast network of websites and social media pages from around the world.
