DF1 Racing signs youngster Marcel Lenerz from Germany

DF1 Racing has signed the next driver for the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES) 2020. Marcel Lenerz from Germany will prove himself in the EuroNASCAR 2 championship after his appearance in the NWES recruitment program. The 22-year-old race driver from Bad Hersfeld, Germany, will share the #99 Chevrolet Camaro with his fellow countryman Justin Kunz, who will be chasing for points in the EuroNASCAR PRO championship.

Lenerz switched from karting to formula racing in 2014 to take his first steps in professional racing. Most recently, the German was driving in the VLN at the legendary Nürburgring. In 2020 Lenerz will pursue his dream to become the first German NASCAR champion. DF1 Racing offers the new Tiger a professional and strong environment to achieve his goals.

"I was racing in the VLN, where we share a car with several drivers. The whole team must always fit to be successful. To shine as a driver is not so easy there," said Lenerz about his decision to join the NASCAR world. "That’s why I want to drive a car on my own again and to be responsible for myself again. EuroNASCAR is a great platform for me, because it is simply pure racing – especially when it comes to cars. You still have to drive with an H-shift and without driving aids. I think it’s just great that it has remained so puristic. It’s great fun to drive the cars. The competition is also strong, the other drivers are really good."

"DF1 Racing is the champion team from last season, that speaks for itself," said Lenerz about the decision to join the Austrian team. "I visited the team and was immediately impressed by its professionalism. I think that the mechanics have the car and its setup completely under their control. I can certainly achieve a lot with this team. That’s why I’m very positive about the new season. Of course I want to do the best I can. I don’t know exactly where I stand yet because I can’t assess the competition. I will do my best and hope to finish the season in the top-3. Everyone who races wants to win. So, of course the title is the goal, but first we have to see how the pace is. After the season opener in Valencia we’ll know better where we actually stand."

DF1 Head of Motorsport Norbert Walchhofer is enthusiastic about his new driver: "We have seen Marcel’s good performances in the NWES recruitment program in autumn 2019. Then he asked us whether there was still room for a new DF1 Tiger in the team. We were delighted about that. We were looking for just such a motivated young driver for the #99 car, which, as is well known, will be piloted by Justin Kunz in the 2020 ENPRO season. Marcel knows that the level in the EN2 is very high and he is looking forward to the challenge. With his experience in karting, formula and GT racing he has all the what it takes to climb the Olympus in the EN2. His 37 race wins in other racing classes proof what he’s capable of. Marcel will wear the DF1 colors for the first time on 22 March in Altaussee in Austria when we officially present our drivers. Afterwards the first tests will follow."

The NWES season starts on April 25-26 in Valencia, Spain at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. For Lenerz, this will be the first challenge of his EuroNASCAR adventure, which may take him to the Hall Of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina.
