Hendriks Motorsport back on track for first post-lockdown test

Champion team Hendriks Motorsport returned to the track for the first time last week in preparation for the 2020 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season. The Dutch team brought two of its three Ford Mustang, the #50 and the #18, to the Hockenheimring with reigning NASCAR Champion Loris Hezemans, Giorgio Maggi, Vittorio Ghirelli and rookie Tobias Dauenhauer taking turns behind the wheel.

“It was a really good test and it was great to see the whole crew back together and especially to meet my new teammate Tobias Dauenhauer,” said Hezemans, who will share the #50 Mustang with Dauenhauer after both competed in the EuroNASCAR Esports Series. “We worked a lot on him getting acquainted with the car and the team and I’m really happy with the progress we made. We ran smoothly all day. We wanted to test the new General Tire slick tyres but the weather didn’t cooperate. We’ll have to do that later, but it was just great to be back in the car for the first time since the 2019 Zolder Finals and work all together as a team.”

After driving the #50 Mustang to the Teams Championship title together with Hezemans in 2019 and bringing home the second place in the EuroNASCAR 2 championship, Giorgio Maggi completed his first test as a EuroNASCAR PRO driver.

“It felt amazing to be back in the car. I was so excited to finally get on track and to see the team and start working with them again,” said the Swiss, who finished 10th in points in the ENES on iRacing, bringing 28 points to the #18 Mustang to start the season. “The V8 sound and the raw NASCAR feeling really put a huge smile on my face. It took me a few laps to get the feeling for the car back, but we managed to have some good runs and even do some setup work. I’m really looking forward to the season opener in Vallelunga.”

Vittorio Ghirelli is joining Hendriks Motorsport to share the #18 car with Maggi and aim at the EuroNASCAR 2 title. With one year of experience and his first win in the bag – he captured the checkered flag in a fantastic battle at Raceway Venray in 2019 – Ghirelli quickly integrated in the Hendriks Motorsport methodology.

“It was a long, long nine-month wait but we’re finally back on track! Hendriks Motorsport’s results speak for themselves, they are very professional and I found myself immediately at ease with them. It was a very productive test. Despite the rain, we were quick and very consistent at Hockenheim and that gives me even more confidence for the upcoming season. I can’t wait for it to start,” said the Italian, who will celebrate the start of the season at his home track of Vallelunga, Rome.

With a spectacular win in the last round of the virtual season on iRacing, rookie Tobias Dauenhauer finished second in the EuroNASCAR Esports Series, bringing 35 points to the #50 Mustang in the Teams Championship. It was definitely a good start for the German, who drove a real-life Hendriks Motorsport car for the first time last week at Hockenheim.

“It was a great day. I couldn’t wait to be back in a real race car after the last few months. The whole team enjoyed it a lot, even if it was raining all the time. I have to get used to the car as quickly as possible and this was my first full test day. I missed that v8 sound and I can’t wait to be back in a EuroNASCAR car and I really hope we can bring home some good results like we did on iRacing,” smiled Dauenhauer, who came to EuroNASCAR through the Drivers Recruitment Program.

The first race of the 2020 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will be the September 12-13 NASCAR GP Italy at the Autodromo Piero Taruffi of Vallelunga, Rome.
