One of the many reasons the 2020 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season will be remembered is for sure Arianna Casoli’s win in the Legend trophy. The Italian from Reggio Emilia experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in her fifth EuroNASCAR season and claimed the top step of the podium in the special classification for drivers aged 40 and over.
In her fifth EuroNASCAR 2 season, Casoli produced her best effort in European NASCAR so far: she ended up 11th in points, grabbed her first top-5 finish overall and brought home the Legend Trophy. Casoli edged Yevgen Sokolovskiy, who finished 13th overall, 33 points behind the CAAL Racing driver. In the Lady Trophy, Casoli finished second behind Julia Landauer.
Round 4 at Circuit Zolder in Belgium marked the best ever finish by Casoli in her EuroNASCAR career. In a wild race, she managed to gain several positions from 16th on the grid to finish fifth after 15 laps on a drying track.
At Automotodrom Grobnik, she suffered a setback due to a crash in Qualifying that forced her to skip the first Croatian race. She jumped on the #88 CAAL Racing car in the second race on Sunday to limit the damage. After a solid run at Circuit Ricardo Tormo – back at the wheel of the #54 Chevrolet Camaro – Casoli clinched the title in the Legend Trophy classification.
"It was a tricky and tough season from many points of views," said Casoli. "But I managed to grab a very good result in the end and I’m very happy that I ended up first in the Legend Trophy standings. The highlight was the top-5 result in Zolder, my best ever finish in my NWES career. I thank my team CAAL Racing, all my partners, the EuroNASCAR and the fans for all the support throughout the 2020 season, it was just amazing."
Casoli is now working on the program to come back to EuroNASCAR in the 2021 season and defend her Legend Trophy title. The Italian also aims to grab her third Lady Trophy in the upcoming championship and beat her personal records she set in the 2020 season.
