Last weekend the third round of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series took place at Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic. The changing weather conditions had been an issue all weekend long, but played into the hands of the DF1-Tigers.
Qualifying started on a wet track. With no more rain, the track dried and the lap times improved. The DF1-Tigers did not manage to find the right timing for their best laps. In the end, Nicolò Rocca was the best Tiger on P14.
When the first race started, the track was almost completely dry, but soon after the green flag the rain hit the track once again. One by one, the drivers came to the pits to change the tires. Marc Goossens in his Lettner Trans Chevrolet Camaro #77 decided to pit at the right time, which in the end led to P3 in the overall results and his first podium for DF1 Racing. His teammate Nicolò Rocca in the Grapos Chevrolet Camaro #22 rounded off a good result for DF1 Racing with P5. Henri Tuomaala stayed out on track with the slicks a little bit too long and just missed a top 10-result. But he was able to win the Challenger Trophy.
The second race on Sunday was no less chaotic, but not as successful as the first race. Marc Goossens was hit by another car in the first lap, which resulted in a flat tire. He had to pit and change the tire, which cost him a lot of time. For Patrick Lemarié and Ian Eric Wadén the race found an early end in the first lap, due to race incidents. Henri Tuomaala was the best Tiger on Sunday. He achieved his first top 10-result in 2021 with P9 and yet another victory in the Challenger Trophy and is now leading in the overall standings of the Challenger Trophy. Nicolò Rocca finished the race on P10, while Marc Goossens crossed the finish line on P11.
Marc Goossens: “It was a weekend with mixed emotions, just like the mixed weather conditions. It was my first time at Most, the weather didn’t actually help to learn the track and get the right feeling. My experience in reading a situation helped me a lot, I think, too choose the right moment for the pit stop. It is nice to be back on the podium. Unfortunately I’ve been hit in the second race and had to pit due to a flat tire. P11 is not the result I was looking for, but with the time we lost, we have to be satisfied with that.”
Nicolò Rocca: “We came to Most with high expectations. I think a win would have been possible in the first race, but I had problems with the visibility in the rain. Both races have been pretty chaotic, so we have to be satisfied with the results. We scored some good points for the championship and are still in a good position.”
Henri Tuomaala: “The weather conditions have been a challenge this weekend. The first race was one of the most interesting ones in my career. The leading cars pitted extremely early, from my point of view. I took the risk and stayed out. It wasn’t raining that bad at that time and the slicks worked well. Undfortunately the rain increased and my plan didn’t work out. In the second race, my starting position was quite bad, but I had the speed. It’s difficult to overtake in Most, so I couldn’t improve further than P9. I’m happy that the #23 worked so well and we finally had the right speed!”
