Three out of four: Melvin de Groot keeps winning in the Legend Trophy

Melvin de Groot is the man to beat in the 2022 Legend Trophy classification. So far the Dutchman scored three wins out of four races in the special EuroNASCAR 2 classification for drivers aged 40 and more. The Team Bleekemolen driver joined the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series in 2019 as a sub for Michael Bleekemolen, whose back got injured in a karting crash. In 2022, de Groot shares the car with Sebastiaan Bleekemolen, while Michael took over the #72 Ford Mustang.

De Groot scored three consecutive wins at Valencia and Brands Hatch and therefore leads the Legend Trophy standings in sixth overall. At Brands Hatch, the 44-year-old made it into the overall top-5 for the second time in his career after a third place at Circuit Zolder back in 2021. Despite some troubles in Round 4 at Brands Hatch he now boasts 104 points in the overall standings and therefore has a 5-point advantage over second-placed Miguel Gomes.

The Portuguese impressed with his consistency so far. The 42-year-old Marko Stipp Motorsport driver is competing in his second EuroNASCAR 2 season and stepped on the Legend Trophy podium in all four races of the 2022 NWES Championship in Spain and the UK. Gomes broke into the top-10 twice and sits in seventh place in the overall standings.

Marko Stipp Motorsport is playing two cards in the 2022 Legend Trophy: Yevgen Sokolovskiy is third in the special classification by virtue of his tenth position overall. The 43-year-old Ukrainian stepped onto the podium in three of four races so far and like his teammate impressed with his consistency. The driver of the #48 Chevrolet is only nine points shy of Legend Trophy leader de Groot.

2020 Legend Trophy winner and reigning Lady Trophy Champion Arianna Casoli sits in fourth. The Speedhouse driver is chasing her first top-10 finish in the 2022 season and was hunted by bad luck in all four races. With a solid 17th place in Sunday’s race at Brands Hatch, the 48-year-old almost made it onto the Legend Trophy podium by finishing fourth in the special classification. The next event will mark Casoli’s home race at Rome’s Autodromo di Vallelunga.

Casoli’s Speedhouse teammate, French NWES veteran Eric Quintal, follows in fifth just 3 points behind the Reggio Emilia native driver. Roberto Benedetti, who scored his first Legend Trophy podium at Brands Hatch on Saturday is sixth ahead of Michael Bleekemolen, the oldest driver on the grid at the age of 72.

Paolo Valeri is seventh, while Brands Hatch Legend Trophy race winner Claudio Cappelli sits in eighth. Janne Koikkalainen, Matthias Hauer, Yannis Panagiotis, Andrea Tronconi and Christoph Lenz complete the standings of the 13-car record grid in the Legend Trophy. The next race will take place on July 9-10 at Autodromo di Vallelunga in Italy. Qualifying and all races will be broadcast live on EuroNASCAR.com, the NWES YouTube channel, Motorsport.tv and plenty of TV services from around the world.
