Yevgen Sokolovskiy the new leader in the Legend Trophy

With two wins at Autodrom Most, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series sees a new leader in the EuroNASCAR 2 Legend Trophy: Yevgen Sokolovskiy. The Marko Stipp Motorsport driver, who’s pulling double duties by racing in both championships in the 2022 NWES season, took over the top of the special classification for drivers aged 40 and more with two impressive wins in the Legend Trophy in the Czech Republic. The driver of the #48 Chevrolet Camaro also holds the lead in the EuroNASCAR PRO Challenger Trophy.

It could not have been a better weekend for Sokolovskiy at Autodrom Most, the 4.2 kilometer high speed track close to the German border. With a fifth place, the Düsseldorf resident beat Claudio Cappelli on Saturday under the checkered flag to score the best personal NASCAR results of his career so far. The Ukrainian started from 15th and avoided several incidents in turn 1 to storm into the top-5 for the first time in his career.

Sokolovskiy continued with another strong performance on Sunday when he scored his third top-10 result in 2022 with the ninth position under the checkered flag. Again, Sokolovskiy took advantage of a late crash in the 14-lap race and passed several cars in the closing stages to gain plenty of positions. In the end, he beat his Marko Stipp Motorsport teammate Miguel Gomes by only 0.762 seconds. With two strong results at Autodrom Most, Sokolovskiy is now seventh overall and in the lead of the Legend Trophy classification.

“I’m so happy about the outcome of the second EuroNASCAR 2 race and my two Legend Trophy wins at Autodrom Most,” said Sokolovskiy, who injured his hand during the weekend but still managed to score the personal best results of his NWES career on Saturday. “The Sunday race was way better than the previous one as we didn’t have so many crashes and caution laps. It was nice and I’m now looking forward to Zolder.”

His teammate Gomes from Portugal sits in second thanks to the eleventh position in the overall EuroNASCAR 2 standings. The driver of the #46 Chevrolet Camaro was twelfth on Saturday at Most and took fourth in the Legend Trophy behind Matthias Hauer, who scored his first Legend Trophy podium in the 2022 NWES season. Gomes is 27 points down on Sokolovskiy before the regular season finale at Circuit Zolder on October 8-9.

Melvin de Groot used his two joker races of the regular season – only the eight best out of ten results count ahead of the EuroNASCAR Finals at Automotodrom Grobnik, Croatia – and was therefore shuffled down to third. The Dutchman has a good chance to take back the lead again before the Finals if he scores a decent result in Belgium.

2020 Legend Trophy Champion Arianna Casoli is fourth in the special classification, tied in points with her Speedhouse teammate Eric Quintal, who closes the top-5. Michael Bleekemolen – EuroNASCAR’s oldest driver at the age of 72 – follows in sixth, while Paolo Valeri, Cappelli, Roberto Benedetti and Hauer round out the top-10. With four more races to go, the joker races coming into play and double points on the line at Grobnik, the Legend Trophy drivers will for sure provide a legendary battle for the title.
