Alexander Graff and Nicolo Rocca: will the two race winners put their hands on the title?

All eyes are on NASCAR Whelen Euro Series championship leader Alon Day and his closest rival Gianmarco Ercoli. The two EuroNASCAR PRO top drivers are separated by just six points ahead of the October 29-30 NWES Finals at Automotodrom Grobnik in Croatia. But this season saw two more race winners that may have a chance to put their hands on the big Tijey Trophy that will be awarded to the champion. Brands Hatch race winner Alexander Graff is only eight points shy of Day, while Valencia topper Nicolo Rocca is 21 points adrift from the championship lead.

With double points on the line in Croatia, the Swede and the Italian will both have the opportunity to hunt for their first title after proving to be winning material in Europe’s official NASCAR championship this season. Consistency is one of the keys to success in the championship and both Graff and Rocca had a solid season so far. While the challenging track in Grobnik is new to Graff, Rocca has scored three top-10 finishes in Croatia so far with two seventh-place finishes marking the personal best for the Italian.

“We’re one of three with just eight points separating us, so we’re in it to win it,” said Graff, who was 8th and 14th in the Belgian rounds. “But we should have gained more out of Zolder which was a disappointment. We have shown during the season that we can be the fastest and visit Victory Lane. Me and Speedhouse are looking forward to giving our best, maximizing the car and myself. It’s not over until the checkered flag drops! Grobnik will be a new track for me and with eight points less than Alon, it will be for sure a nut to crack. I’m ready for the fight with Alon and Gianmarco.”

After finishing 4th and 15th in Zolder, Rocca commented his chances: “The #56 Chevrolet has been fast all year long but a few unfortunate events in the last few races put us a bit further behind to where we should realistically be. In Croatia we will have nothing to lose so we will be in full-attack mode all weekend long. That will hopefully lead to gaining a few spots in the championship and still the title is on the table.”

In the regular season finale, Graff and Rocca scored important points towards the championship, but the biggest mover in the overall standings was Ercoli, who stormed from seventh to second with two dominant victories in the woods of Limburg. Still, the Swede and the Italian cannot be crossed off the list of title contenders ahead of the last two races of the season. Winning at Grobnik will be key for all title contenders and especially if the rivalry between Day and Ercoli will explode, Graff and Rocca may be the best bet for the title.
