Bart Dehaese Giorgio Maggi Leads Pack Brands Hatch 2022

Unchallenged Junior Trophy win for Swiss youngster Giorgio Maggi

The 2022 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season saw five drivers battling for the EuroNASCAR PRO Championship in the Finals at Automotodrom Grobnik in Croatia. One of the title contenders was Giorgio Maggi from Switzerland, who traveled to the Croatian Riviera with an enormous lead in the Junior Trophy for drivers aged 25 and under. The Hergiswil native, who’s famous for his signature pose sticking one finger in the air while barely smiling, wanted to get his hands on the big trophy but in the end, he had to settle for his maiden Junior Trophy win.

Maggi switched teams at the beginning of the season and joined Race Art Technology from Switzerland to drive the #18 Toyota Camry. After finding the right rhythm with his new engineers and mechanics, the 24-year-old built up some great momentum in the middle of the season. He scored his first podium of 2022 on Sunday at the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit and started a phenomenal streak of three consecutive podiums – two more top-3 finishes followed at Autodromo di Vallelunga in Italy.

By the time Maggi traveled to Autodrom Most, the Swiss had already four Junior Trophy race wins on his tally. The incredible run continued on Sunday in the Czech Republic and since then it was a given that Maggi would be the dominant force in the special classification. With two more Junior Trophy victories at Circuit Zolder and Automotodrom Grobnik, he carved in stone his overall win among young drivers in the premier division of European NASCAR racing. A strong year with a total of four podium finishes, one pole position and a shot at the overall title ended with a fifth place in the standings and the dominant win in the Junior Trophy ranks.

Maggi joined the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series back in 2019 after switching from GT3 and GT4 racing to the pure racing style of the 400hp EuroNASCAR cars without any electronic driving aids. He had a blast of a rookie season in EuroNASCAR 2 and finished runner-up at the end of a memorable title battle with Lasse Soerensen. The Swiss then moved up to EuroNASCAR PRO and honed his skills race after race. 2022 marked a breakthrough for the 24-year-old, who stepped up to compete for overall wins in EuroNASCAR PRO. He also gained his first experience in the US in a NASCAR Xfinity Series car that year. A visit to Victory Lane was the missing cherry on top of the cake for Maggi in the 2022 NWES season.

Living in the Alps, Maggi is a calm race car driver, who hits the switch as soon as he wears his helmet. Promoting the technology of the future of a digital marketing employee for renewable energies, Maggi has all the tools to show the world what he’s made of. The cars and bikes enthusiast likes to work on vehicles in his spare time and also loves to play video games. With the breathtaking nature of the Alps around him, he also likes to hike and just enjoy the beauty of the mountains surrounding his home. Maggi likes to go from zero to one-hundred and is poised to make the next step in the 2023 season.

When asked about his memories of the 2022 NWES season, he answered: “For me the best moment in 2022 came at Brands Hatch. First of all, the atmosphere is just unmatched during this phenomenal weekend and I also grabbed my maiden EuroNASCAR PRO podium in the UK this season.” This was the event where he got perfectly in tune with Race Art Technology, a veteran team in the NWES that worked hard to provide the Swiss with a strong and reliable race car.

Despite having won the Junior Trophy, Maggi is not completely happy with the results of 2022. “Of course the focus was on the overall championship, but still after the last unlucky years, I am very happy that we accomplished the victory in the Junior Trophy,” said Maggi, who’s a master of short words and clear statements. The ambition of joining the 2023 NWES championship battle again is well justified and the 24-year-old is looking for his maiden EuroNASCAR PRO win. His first chance will be the season opener at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain, on May 6-7.
